I am creating an organization called Up Speak which is intended for women who want more encouragement and support in their professional pursuits. New York houses countless ambitious people from countless places who mostly come to be competitive in their field, to find their way in a concrete jungle whether that be to blend in or stand out. It’s an easy place for people to feel lost and alone, for it to feel like you’re always taking one step forward and two steps backward when it comes to finding community.
There are a growing number of women focused professional event series and organizations (which is amazing)! I’ve been exposed to many and always learn something and walk away with the comforting feeling that I’m not the only one trying to figure out what I want to dedicate my life to.
How will Up Speak be different?
The hope with Up Speak is that, by meeting multiple times with the same group, members are accountable to the group. They will have a higher chance of walking away with people they’ll actually keep in touch with and, since members are matched with women in similar positions, it’s more likely they’ll walk away with advice they can actually apply to their life. It’s a deeper dive than a one off event, which is ambitious in a city that is constantly on the go.
I’ve organized three “Beta” groups of 5 friends to be my test guinea pigs. Meeting four times over the next couple months, I hope to get more experience facilitating, to see what questions and exercises everyone responds to, and to get as much feedback as possible. I am going to chronicle my learnings in this here blog as a personal record and also a story to share with anyone who is interested!
