CreativeMornings is a caffeinated lecture series for creative communities. Serial entrepreneur Tina Roth Eisenberg started the series in Brooklyn in 2008. Today events are hosted in 132 cities and counting.
The recent CreativeMornings in NYC was held at the lovely New School University Center and featured the negotiation expert William Ury. As I sat in the auditorium full of 200+ people, I felt a palpable buzzed energy in the room. I looked around me and felt like everyone here must be a designer or architect or author. I had the smallest pang of self-doubt: Am I creative enough to be here?? It’s amazing how just by labeling something as “creative”, you actually feel more creative and you assume that everyone else is creative too.
A self-fulfilling prophecy, by deeming a space or community X or Y, it becomes and attracts X and Y. Mapping the power of labels onto Up Speak, I hope that members come to their first meeting anticipating and feeling that everyone else there is supportive and inspiring because they’ve been told that those are Up Speak’s values. Up Speak embraces the idea that we can all grow and feel more fulfilled with each other’s help and encouragement - so, ideally, that is what will happen!
