Sally and Lisa told us about CreativeMorning’s history and how they keep their HQ team lean (just 5 people!). In summation it all comes down to: “Trust breeds Magic”. HQ does their homework ahead of time by carefully vetting hosts. But, once a host is onboarded and provided branding assets, they are left largely to their own devices. Hosts recruit their own volunteer team, find their own event spaces, and schedule their own speakers. CreativeMornings believes and put into practice the motto: “Community is not a community until it starts organizing itself”.
They outlined 5 ingredients that they think are required for a community to exist and thrive:
- Non-transactional giving
- Self-identifying membership
- Alignment of desires
- Customs and Rituals
- Empowerment of the individual
The CreativeMorning presenters conceded that there can be a use to limits when community building. Their goal is not to be in every single city, but to grow organically but with quality. It’s amazing that if HQ shut down tomorrow, CreativeMornings would still continue to happen across the world.
Challenge for you: Think about the communities that you belong to or that you’ve observed around you. Do they have all of these 5 ingredients?
