We started the night by introducing ourselves and what we do in our business life and ended with a closing “reaction”. Everything in between was free flowing conversation, shared feelings surrounding topics like: going your own way, confidence in yourself and your offering, proactive creative problem solving, how to focus yourself in a way that doesn’t limit you.
I left the meeting meditating on these big ideas:
- Confidence: seems to be a go-to topic of discussion amongst professional women. Unprompted, half of our discussion revolved around knowing our worth. I realized that any negotiation or discussion about money is a powerful way to show your confidence in that a cold, hard number serves as a marker for how you feel you should be valued.
- Beginners: It’s hard to feel confident when you’re doing something for the first time. According to the model of “situational leadership”, it’s easier to find yourself in the first stage of HIGH enthusiasm, but LOW experience when you begin doing something new. Models can serve as comforting blankets during uncertain times, reassuring us that we will get to where we want to be with time and with effort.
- Renaissance women: There is a sizable section of the workforce that is endeavoring to create their own jobs- cobbling together an interdisciplinary offering - which presents a real opportunity for these curious, entrepreneurial types to brand or present themselves creatively.
- Individual collective: We were all brought together because we share something in common: a desire to forge our own path. Yet, we are not islands but an archipelago. The beautiful thing about women who want to help and learn from one another is that we truly can encourage one another’s independent pursuits, making all of us stronger collectively.
I am looking forward to learning more from the Badass Babes group and to continue sharing my takeaways with the Up Speak community. Thanks to Jen and New Love City for the opportunity!
